Keeping our water supply clean and healthy is a major undertaking these days, although few people in the developed world realize it.  Extensive systems and procedures have been developed and put into place that keep most of us supplied with seemingly unending amounts of drinkable water, available out of any faucet we choose to turn on.  Helping to keep our water clean are the myriads of water treatment companies out there who provide everything from chlorine to boiler chemical treatment to water treatment systems for the home.  We take these things for granted and usually do not realize that people work very hard to be able to provide them.
